Cranky croc steals Aussie zoo worker's lawn mower (AP)

SYDNEY ? A giant saltwater crocodile named Elvis with an apparent affinity for household machinery charged at an Australian reptile park worker Wednesday before stealing his lawn mower.

Tim Faulkner, operations manager at the Australian Reptile Park, north of Sydney, was one of three workers tending to the lawn in Elvis' enclosure when he heard reptile keeper Billy Collett let out a yelp. Faulkner looked up to see the 16-foot (5-meter), 1,100-pound (500-kilogram) crocodile lunging out of its lagoon at Collett, who warded the creature off with his mower.

"Before we knew it, the croc had the mower above his head," Faulkner said. "He got his jaws around the top of the mower and picked it up and took it underwater with him."

The workers quickly left the enclosure. Elvis, meanwhile, showed no signs of relinquishing his new toy and sat guarding it closely all morning.

Eventually, Faulkner realized he had no other choice but to go back in after the mower.

Collett lured Elvis to the opposite end of the lagoon with a heaping helping of kangaroo meat while Faulkner plunged, fully clothed, into the water. Before grabbing the mower, however, he had to search the bottom of the lagoon for two 3-inch (7-centimeter) teeth Elvis lost during the encounter. He quickly found them and escaped from the pool, unharmed and with mower in tow.

Though many may question the wisdom of going after a couple of teeth with a massive crocodile lurking just feet away, Faulkner said finding them was critical. "They clog up the filter systems," he said.

And, perhaps more important, he said, "They're a nice souvenir."

Elvis has a history of cranky behavior and has occasionally lunged at staff before, though this is the first time he has stolen something from one of the workers. The croc was initially captured in the northern Australian city of Darwin, where he had been attacking fishing boats. He was then moved to a crocodile farm, where he proceeded to kill his two crocodile girlfriends.

In 2008, he was moved to the reptile park, where he has enjoyed solitary confinement in his own enclosure.

"When they are the dominant croc, they're just full of testosterone," Faulkner said. "He's got his beautiful own yard, he wants to be a solitary creature. He's happy."

Despite having to give up the lawn mower, Elvis was clearly pleased with himself, Faulkner said.

"He's beaten us today ... he's kingpin," Faulkner said. "He's going to be walking around with his chest puffed out all day."

As for the staff at the reptile park?

"I can't lie, the bosses are not going to be happy about the cost of a new lawn mower," Faulkner said with a laugh. "(But) we love it. No one's injured ... and when you get scared and it all turns out to be good, it's actually quite enjoyable."

Mom of Iran detainee questions alleged confession

(AP) ? The mother of an Iranian-American detained in Iran for four months on espionage charges says his alleged confession was made under duress.

Behnaz Hekmati says her son, Amir, a former U.S. military translator, was in Iran to visit his two grandmothers and that the charges against him make no sense.

Iranian prosecutors say Hekmati was working for the CIA. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Behnaz Hekmati appealed to Iranian authorities to treat him fairly and provide him due process.

"It is clear to me and our entire family that Amir is speaking under duress," she said.

"The statement from the courts that Amir planned on permanently leaving the United States to reside in Iran is totally false. It is an indication that he is not speaking freely but being forced to say something that isn't true."

Behnaz Hekmati said her son has financial and business investments in the U.S. and "would never walk away from them."

"In this environment Amir is a victim. We are convinced that there is a mistake or misunderstanding," she said. "We pray and hope he will be allowed to come home soon."

The State Department has called for Hekmati's release and said on Wednesday that it was still waiting for Iranian authorities to grant Swiss diplomats access to him in prison.

Spokesman Mark Toner said the Swiss, who represent U.S. interests in Iran, have been denied access to Hekmati three times. Hekmati has been detained since August.

Texas killer of 6 wore Santa Claus outfit, police say

GRAPEVINE, Texas ? The man police say shot six family members to death in a Grapevine apartment on Christmas before killing himself was dressed as Santa Claus, according to a police spokesman.

Grapevine Police Lt. Todd Dearing said police are still working out the timeline of the massacre, the worst ever in Grapevine. The victims were found next to open gifts near a Christmas tree, police said.

"We don't know if he was with them or he came over later," Dearing said, referring to the man police believe was the killer.

Two handguns were found at the scene. Police say one of the dead, a middle-aged man, is suspected of being responsible for what is apparently a murder-suicide.

Police have said some of the victims were seated on furniture, and others were slumped on the floor.

Two of the women and one man were 18 to 20, police said. The other women were older, and the other men were in their 50s.

All seven were "related either by blood or marriage," Dearing said. Three of the victims lived in the apartment, he said.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.

"We're waiting on the autopsy report and for the medical examiner's office to contact next of kin and confirm identities," Sgt. Robert Eberling said

Late Sunday, bodies were still as they had been found in the apartment while investigators looked for clues.

Police received a 911 call from the Lincoln Vineyards Apartments late Christmas morning, but no one spoke on the other end.

When a patrolman arrived at an apartment near neighbor Claire Comparato's to check things out, he saw bodies slumped around the living room. No one answered the door. When officers forced their way in, they found the victims.

Putin rejects suggestions of talks with opposition (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has rejected the possibility of talks with opposition leaders who drew tens of thousands of people to protest rallies across the country.

The prime minister told Russian news agencies on Wednesday that "there's no one to talk to" among the leaders.

Putin's authority was dented by a recent parliamentary election in which his party lost 25 percent of seats despite widespread allegations of vote-rigging in its favor.

The vote fraud triggered the country's largest protest rallies in 20 years that demanded a rerun of the vote and Putin's resignation.

Putin on Tuesday firmly rejected the protesters' demands.

Putin served as Russia's president in 2000-2008 and is now seeking a third term in office.

Kim Jong-Il?s Eldest Son ?Under Chinese Protection?

The eldest son of North Korea?s late leader Kim Jong-Il has arrived in Beijing as Pyongyang prepares a state funeral for his father, South Korea?s Yonhap news agency reported on Monday.

Citing what it called a source familiar with Kim Jong-Nam?s activities, it said he arrived in Beijing from Macau a few days ago and ?has been placed under Chinese protection?.

?

In a January interview with the Tokyo Shimbun, Jong-Nam was quoted as voicing opposition to the planned dynastic succession.

?Even Chairman Mao Zedong of China did not enforce hereditary succession,? he was quoted as saying.

?(Hereditary succession) does not fit with socialism, and my father was against it as well.?

The Big Gaming Remake Guide - Features - www.GameInformer.com

Unless it's a downloadable, I honestly don't understand how we can honestly be allowed to go back after Halo Anniversary's new take to Remaking the classics.

Seriously, if you're going to remake a game don't just slap on higher resolution textures and call it a day. Update the character models, improve the animation, work on the lighting. Give us an actual reason to buy the game we already have a copy of lying around.

You can argue that the collections give you more than one game. But for $40 Halo Anniversary was definitely something any Halo fan could get behind. And if you're a fan of say Devil May Cry I'm sure you could say the same about a similar approach to those games.

Note Describes Steve Jobs As Secretive 'Joker' Who 'Sounds Flakey'

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

Bloomberg has published a note written by Mike Rose in June 1976 that describes Steve Jobs as a secretive 'joker' who 'sounds flakey'.

At the time Steve Jobs was looking for someone to print the manual for the Apple I. Jobs' friend Regis McKenna, head of Silicon Valley's premier advertising and public relations firm, suggested he contact Mike Rose who ran an advertising agency in Los Altos.

After Rose spoke with Jobs on the phone he left a note for his business partner, warning him that Jobs would likely be in touch.

Here's what it said:

Bob -
This joker (attached) is going to be calling you. Somebody at Regis McKenna reco - mended us (you). They are 2 guys - They build kits - operate out of a garage - want 10m [?] catalog sheets. Wants it for nothing. Wouldn't trust me. Told him we'd like to see what they've got - we'd estimate - Then decide.

Sounds flakey. Watch it!

Mike

Jobs' ended up rejected Rose's bid for being too high and had a typesetter produce the Apple I manual. The note was donated to the Silicon Valley Archives at Stanford in 1998.

A Rookie Was Willing To Pay $1 Million Of His Own Money To Play In The NBA This Season

Other than laying claim to Michael Jordan as their owner, the Charlotte Bobcats don?t exactly have much going for them.

And even ?His Airness? isn?t holding the same cache among people that it used to.

Just don?t tell that to Bismack Biyombo.

The first-round draft pick wanted to play for a franchise that?s never won more than 44 games so badly, that he was willing to pay?his own way to make that a reality.

Under contract with Fuenlabrada, a Spanish club, for two more seasons, the team held Biyombo to his $1.5 million buyout. With the Bobcats only able to pay $500,000 and Biyombo?s court attempts to lower the buyout total foiled, the Congo native agreed to pay the difference out of his own pocket.

That?s serious dedication.

Especially for a team whose stated offensive philosophy this season will be to make Corey Maggette the ?focal point? of their offense.

Yahoo May Be Poised to Exit Asia with Alibaba Disposition (NewsFactor)

Even as Yahoo looks for a successor to fired CEO Carol Bartz, the ailing search prince may be looking to shed more corporate assets: Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan.

According to several news reports, Yahoo's board of directors is considering selling off most of the company's holdings in the Alibaba Group of China and its Japanese affiliate. Yahoo would sell the assets back to their majority owners. Softbank is the controlling owner of Yahoo Japan. Yahoo's board is reportedly reviewing the transaction.

According to Forbes, the deal is a complicated transaction with high stakes: Yahoo could reap $17 billion from the sale of the Asia assets. Yahoo paid $1 billion to buy into Alibaba in 2005. On the news, Yahoo's stock price reached $15.99 on a 5.82 percent rise.

Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence, noted that the so-called Asian assets are the most valuable ones that Yahoo has at the moment, according to the market. "Yahoo has had a troubled relationship with Jack Ma [the founder and chairman of Alibaba] and Alibaba so I wouldn't be surprised to see it go," Sterling said. "Ma also either wants out of Yahoo entirely or wants to control the entire company."

Alibaba Breaks Through

If Yahoo sheds its Asia assets, it would help focus the company and make shareholders happy. Many of Yahoo's stakeholders have cried for the sale of Alibaba, in which Yahoo owns a 40 percent stake. Yahoo owns a 35 percent stake in Yahoo Japan, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal.

But where Yahoo has struggled, Alibaba.com has performed. Alibaba's revenue was up 11 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2011 despite a depressed global economy and the decline in manufacturing. Revenue from Alibaba.com's international marketplace also increased by 11.8 percent. And revenue from its China marketplace increased 13.9 percent.

"We remain committed to our world's largest B2B customer base and will continue to evolve our business to better serve them with a number of initiatives designed to improve supplier quality and the buyer experience," said Jonathan Lu, CEO of Alibaba.com in the earnings report. During the third quarter, Alibaba.com attracted nearly 4 million new users, for a total of 72.8 million registered users, and now hosts more than 360,000 new storefronts, for a total of 9.6 million.

Yahoo Gets More Social

Meanwhile, Yahoo is forging ahead in the U.S. On Wednesday, Yahoo extended the Facebook integration launched at the f8 developers conference in September. The news activity feature is now available on another 26 Yahoo sites, including omg!, Yahoo TV, Yahoo Movies, and Yahoo Games.

A new social feature, Notifications, has also launched in the U.S., alerting people to social conversations and activity across Yahoo. Yahoo is hoping to bring a deeply personalized, social news experience to its visitors, and reports more than 12 million people have opted in since launch.

"In just three months, we've seen traffic from Facebook to Yahoo! News in the U.S. increase by 300 percent," said Blake Irving, chief product officer, Yahoo, "so we're excited to extend this social activation to more of our worldwide content sites."

UK inflation falls to 4.8 pct, 2nd straight drop (AP)

LONDON ? Inflation in the United Kingdom fell to 4.8 percent in November, official figures showed Tuesday, boosting confidence that the recent run of big price rises increases is ending.

November's rate, announced by the Office for National Statistics, represents the second straight 0.2 percentage point monthly drop. The decline arose as lower prices for food, petrol, clothing, furniture and household equipment offset higher costs for domestic heating and alcoholic beverages.

However, the drop will provide limited relief to households under pressure from low growth and rising unemployment.

"With inflation at 4.8 percent but employee pay growth at just 2.3 percent per annum, real incomes are still falling at a rate which will inevitably squeeze consumer spending in the lead up to Christmas and early next year," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at financial data company Markit.

November was the 24th consecutive month that inflation has been above the Bank of England's official target of around 2 percent. However, the Bank's concern has turned to slow growth in the economy, and in October it authorized 75 billion pounds ($117 billion) of asset purchases in an effort to stimulate growth.

The Bank has projected big declines in inflation over the coming year as higher sales tax falls out of the annual comparison and the faltering economy continues to rein in wage demands. The bank halved its forecast for economic growth in 2012 to 1 percent, and pared its projection for 2013 by half a point to 2.5 percent.

APNewsBreak: MLB avg salary up 2.7 pct to $3.1M (AP)

DALLAS ? The average major league salary increased 2.7 percent this year to nearly $3.1 million, the largest rise since 2008.

The 913 players on Aug. 31 rosters and disabled lists averaged $3,095,183, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday in its annual report, up from $3,014,572 last year when the average topped $3 million for the first time.

The average figures to go up next year, with the minimum salary rising from $414,000 to $480,000 under the new labor contract.

The New York Yankees had the highest average salary for the 13th consecutive season, but at $6.54 million it declined for the second straight year, down from a peak of $7.66 million when they won the World Series in 2009.

Philadelphia was second at $6.44 million, followed by Boston ($5.21 million), the Los Angeles Angels ($4.58 million) and the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals ($4.47 million). AL champion Texas was 15th at $3.01 million.

Among other playoff teams, Detroit was ninth at $3.96 million, Milwaukee 11th at $3.41 million, Arizona 22nd at $2.12 million and Tampa Bay 28th at $1.54 million. Commissioner Bud Selig has pointed out several times that changes to baseball's labor contract in recent years have increased competitive balance.

Kansas City was last at $1.34 million, just behind San Diego at $1.35 million. Pittsburgh, which was last in 2010, rose to 27th at $1.73 million.

Among regulars at positions, designated hitters took over as the highest average at $9.3 million, followed by first basemen at $8.9 million. With the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez spending time on the disabled list and failing to play 100 games at third base, that position's average dropped from $6.5 million to $5.2 million.

Outfielders were at $5.6 million, second basemen $5.2 million, starting pitchers $4.9 million, shortstops $3.9 million, catchers $2.6 million and relief pitchers $1.9 million.

The commissioner's office will not determine its final figures for a few weeks. Management's numbers usually differ slightly because of different methods of calculation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Ben Roethlisberger passed for two touchdowns and set a team record for career completions as the Pittsburgh Steelers crushed the error-prone Cincinnati Bengals 35-7 on Sunday.

Pittsburgh (9-3) swept the season series from Cincinnati (7-5) for the second straight year behind a 28-point explosion in the second quarter fueled by Roethlisberger, running back Rashard Mendenhall and a 60-yard punt return for a score by Antonio Brown.

Mendenhall and wide receiver Mike Wallace scored two touchdowns for the Steelers, who won for the seventh time in their last eight games.

Cincinnati rookie quarterback Andy Dalton threw for 124 yards and a touchdown to A.J. Green but the Bengals couldn't overcome two turnovers and a handful of special team gaffes to all but end their hopes of winning the AFC North.

Russia's ruling party wary as nation votes

(AP) ? Russians cast their ballots with muted enthusiasm in parliamentary elections Sunday, a vote opinion polls suggest could reduce the strength of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party. Rival parties and election monitors, which have suffered from government crackdowns, alleged significant violations at the polls.

Although Putin and his United Russia party have dominated Russian politics for more than a decade, popular discontent appears to be growing with Putin's strongman style, widespread official corruption and the gap between ordinary Russians and the country's floridly super-rich.

United Russia holds a two-thirds majority in the outgoing State Duma. But a survey last month by the independent Levada Center polling agency indicated the party could get only about 53 percent of the vote in this election, depriving it of the number of seats necessary to change the constitution unchallenged.

Putin wants United Russia ? which many critics now deride as the "party of crooks and thieves" ? to do well in the parliamentary election to help pave the way for his return to the presidency in a vote now three months away. He previously served as president in 2000-2008.

He has warned that a parliament with a wide array of parties would lead to political instability and claimed that Western governments want to undermine the election. A Western-funded election-monitoring group has come under strong official pressure and its Web site was incapacitated by hackers on Sunday.

Only seven parties have been allowed to field candidates for parliament this year, while the most vocal opposition groups have been denied registration and barred from campaigning.

Several parties complained Sunday of extensive election violations aimed at boosting United Russia's vote count, including party observers being hindered in their work.

Communist chief Gennady Zyuganov said his party monitors thwarted an attempt to stuff a ballot box at a Moscow polling station where they found 300 ballots already in the box before the start of the vote.

He said incidents of ballot-stuffing were reported at several other stations in Moscow, Rostov-on-Don and other areas. In the southern city of Krasnodar, unidentified people posing as Communist monitors had shown up at polling stations and the real observers from the party weren't allowed in, Zyuganov said.

In Vladivostok, voters complained to police that United Russia was offering free food in exchange for promises to vote for the party. In St. Petersburg, an Associated Press photographer saw a United Russia emblem affixed to the curtains on a voting booth.

Golos, the country's only independent election-monitoring group, said that in the Volga River city of Samara observers and election commission members from opposition parties had been barred from verifying that the ballot boxes were properly sealed at all polling stations.

Many violations involve absentee ballots, Golos director Liliya Shibanova said. People with absentee certificates were being bused to cast ballots at multiple polling stations in so-called "cruise voting."

Mikhail Kasyanov, a former prime minister during Putin's first presidential term, said he and other opposition activists who voted Sunday are under no illusion that their votes will be counted fairly.

"It is absolutely clear there will be no real count," he said. "The authorities created an imitation of a very important institution whose name is free election, that is not free and is not elections."

An interim report from an elections-monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe noted that "most parties have expressed a lack of trust in the fairness of the electoral process."

United Russia's dominance of politics has induced a grudging sense of impotence among many in the country of 143 million. In Vladivostok, voter Artysh Munzuk noted the contrast between the desire to do one's civic duty and the feeling that it doesn't matter.

"It's very important to come to the polling stations and vote, but many say that it's useless," said the 20-year-old university student.

There are around 110 million eligible voters in Russia and turnout in many areas was lower Sunday compared to the previous election. In several far eastern regions and in Siberia turnout varied between 40 to 48 percent with two hours to go until the polls closed.

A few dozen activists of the Left Front opposition group tried to stage an unsanctioned protest just outside Moscow's Red Square on Sunday, but were quickly dispersed by police, who detained about a dozen of them. Later in the evening, police said they arrested more than 100 other opposition demonstrators in the capital and about 70 in St. Petersburg when they attempted to hold an unauthorized rally.

The websites of Golos and Ekho Moskvy, a prominent, independent-minded radio station were down on Sunday. Both claimed the failures were due to denial-of-service hacker attacks.

"The attack on the site on election day is obviously connected to attempts to interfere with publication of information about violations," Ekho Moskvy editor Alexey Venediktov said in a Twitter post.

Golos, which is funded by U.S. and European grants, has come under massive official pressure in the past week after Putin accused Western governments of trying to influence the election and likened recipients of Western aid to Judas.

Shibanova, the Golos leader, said its hotline was flooded Sunday with autonomically made calls that effectively blocked it. Prior to the vote, many of the group's activists were visited by secret police, while Shibanova was held for 12 hours at an airport and forced to hand over her laptop.

On Friday, the group was fined the equivalent of $1,000 by a Moscow court for violating a law that prohibits publication of election opinion research for five days before a vote.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle said in his blog that he called the Golos head Saturday "to express my support for the work they have been doing, and convey the concern of the White House about the pressure they have been experiencing over the last week."

The group has compiled some 5,300 complaints of election-law violations ahead of the vote, most of which are linked to United Russia. Roughly a third of the complainants ? mostly government employees and students ? say employers and professors are pressuring them to vote for the party.

(AP) ? Virginia Tech says it acted appropriately in alerting the campus that bloody spring day in 2007 during what turned out to be the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The government disagrees and has levied $55,000 in fines, contending the school was too slow in notifying students, faculty and staff and therefore in violation of a federal law requiring timely warnings when there are safety threats.

The university gets a chance Wednesday to begin making its case before an Education Department administrative judge, Ernest C. Canellos, in hopes of erasing a fine that isn't hefty but can leave a black mark on an institution's record.

The fines were levied under a law known as the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to provide warnings in a timely manner and to report the number of crimes on campus. During the Obama administration, there's been a ramping up in enforcement under the act, which has gotten recent attention because of scandals at Penn State and Syracuse.

Investigators have been on the Penn State campus for a Clery Act investigation into whether the university failed to report incidents of sexual abuse in connection to allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. An Education Department spokesman said the department is also reviewing whether a similar investigation will take place at Syracuse. Three men, including two former ballboys, have accused former assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of molesting them as minors.

In the Virginia Tech case, the rare hearing is expected to last two or three days. It probably won't end with an immediate ruling and further legal challenges could follow. Virginia Tech hasn't indicated it is backing down even though experts say schools found in violation of the law typically accept a fine and agree to changes or negotiate a settlement.

This has attracted great interest in higher education circles, given the high profile nature of the crime and the chance to learn how the department applies the law. The 1990 law was named after Lehigh University student Jeanne Clery, who was raped and murdered in her dorm room by another student in 1986.

During this administration, the Education Department has conducted more random Clery Act audits and has worked at times with the FBI. Six schools this year alone are facing fines, which is the same number that paid fines in the first 18 years of the law, said S. Daniel Carter, director of public policy at Security on Campus Inc., a Wayne, Pa.,-based organization formed by Clery's parents.

The maximum fine per violation under the law is $27,500. Colleges and universities can also lose the right to offer federal student loans, but that's never happened. In the highest fine issued under the Clery Act, Eastern Michigan University agreed in 2008 to pay $350,000 for covering up the rape and killing of a student in her dorm room by telling reporters and her parents there were no signs of foul play.

In the Virginia Tech case, the university opted to exercise its right for an appeals hearing before an Education Department administrative judge. Larry Hincker, a university spokesman, said in an email that the actions taken by Virginia Tech were well within the practices in effect then on campuses.

Virginia's attorney general, Kenneth Cuccinelli, said in a statement earlier this year that the appeal was filed to compel the department to treat Virginia Tech fairly. The university contends the department is holding it to a higher standard than what was in place at the time of the shootings.

"There are important principles and policies at stake here that affect not just Virginia Tech, but colleges and universities all across the country," Cuccinelli said in the statement.

The university is facing charges of failure to issue a timely warning and failure to follow its own procedures for providing notification.

"This case is about responsibility," the Education Department said in a court filing. "Specifically, it's about an institution's responsibility to provide vital information to its students and employees as required by federal law."

The department said the university violated the law by waiting more than two hours after two students were shot to death in a residence hall before sending out a campus wide warning by email. The department said the email was too vague because it mentioned only a "shooting incident" but did not say anyone had died. By that time, student gunman Seung-Hui Cho was chaining shut the doors to a classroom building where he killed 30 more people and then himself.

At the time the email was sent, the university has argued it was believed the two students were shot in an isolated domestic incident and that the shooter had left the campus. The school also contends it had planned a news conference to discuss the residence hall shootings until the later shootings intervened.

"This case is not one in which Virginia Tech was avoiding its responsibilities, but rather one in which it responded in a variety of ways that are permissible under the applicable regulations," the university said in a court filing.

Some family members of the students killed have called the fines woefully inadequate. Suzanne Grimes, whose son Kevin Sterne, was injured in the shootings, is scheduled to testify. She said in a telephone interview that university officials failed in their duty to warn students.

"The families of the deceased have a lifetime of grief and the survivors like my son, Kevin, have a lifetime of injuries and what the future holds for them, as a mother I'm concerned about," Grimes said.

Peter Lake, an education law professor at Stetson University College of Law, said higher education officials believe that what happened at Virginia Tech could happen on any campus. At the same time, university administrators are aware that enforcement of the Clery Act has increased, he said.

"It will be very interesting to see what the arguments are and how they are perceived," Lake said. "I think the field is very much on high alert. They are trying to figure out what's happening next."

While the Virginia Tech hearing may prove instructive for other schools on the Clery Act, a more applicable example on how such cases work involved a review at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, Carter said.

The Virginia Tech case focuses on what happened related to a specific incident, while Tarleton State's covered broader issues, which is more typical, Carter said.

The Education Department fined Tarleton State $137,500 in 2009 for allegedly underreporting the number of sexual assaults, burglaries and drug-related crimes on and near the campus between 2002 and 2007. The university appealed.

There wasn't an evidentiary hearing, but after reviewing the evidence, Canellos reduced the fine to $27,500. The case was appealed to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who has not issued a decision.

Michigan State Spartans Take On Wisconsin Badgers In Big Ten Final

Free Press:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio knows Wisconsin is going to add new wrinkles to its offense. The Spartans have to be ready for whatever the Badgers have in store with Russell Wilson, the Big Ten's quarterback of the year, and Montee Ball, the conference's running back and offensive player of the year.

The teams meet for the second time this season tonight in the inaugural Big Ten championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with a Rose Bowl bid on the line.

"The play-action game (is) difficult with Wilson because he presents the run/pass conflict as well," Dantonio said Friday. "When we have trapped him in there, he's found a way to make play at times.
