UGBC launches Writing Centre : Kaieteur News

?

By Leon Suseran

?

The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) last week launched a Writing Centre, the first of its kind in this part of Guyana this week.
Dr Jerry Jailal, lecturer at the university noted that it was another innovative idea of UGBC in responding to the needs of students and wider community. Writing, he posited, and use of language is at the heart of academic excellence and good communication, yet, he noted, writing is a problem all over the world even in developed countries.
?Students have problems with written and oral language. Harvard and Brown Universities in the U.S.A?They have writing centres,?.he stressed.
The idea for a writing centre at UGBC is credited to Professor Daizal R. Samad, Director of the campus.
?I have known Professor Samad to be an innovator and a transformational leader, someone who not only wishes, but who works hard at being a doer and implementer,? Dr. Jailal said
Professor Samad, at the launching ceremony, in speaking to a group of English lecturers including Ms Camanie Khedaroo and Ms Pamela Rose, among others, as well as the Research Methods class, stated that the writing centre is meant to strengthen English language usage across the board and on the campus, irrespective of disciplines.
The centre is equipped with six ?cutting-edge? computers, one serving as a central monitoring device; all are fully connected to the internet with high- speed connectivity. There is also wireless access for additional lap-tops; an overhead projector that could convey internet downloads or centralised computer teaching tools to all the other computers including the campus?s computer centre. There is also a live central screen access, so that meetings with the main campus at Turkeyen can be done right in Berbice without having lecturers travel to Georgetown, cutting on costs.
Samad noted that they plan to use the strong students as tutors ?to facilitate strengthening other students who are not as strong or who are just downright weak, so we will have student volunteers managing this under a faculty member?. An outreach, too, is planned to the CXC Candidates, ?and we know that English Language usage is a problem and the thing is, that people have been complaining and I have not seen much concrete being done to solve that problem? this is concrete!?
Samad stated that UGBC has spent some $8M for lecturers to travel from Berbice to Turkeyen for meetings from January to June this year. ?Now that?s a lot of money, man, $8M! But we could use this centre for small meetings and use things like Skype. It means no traveling; it means we save time and money?.
GT&T, he noted, has identified the campus as a potential ?hot- spot? location for its network.
Within two years, Samad noted that the campus envisages? the establishment of a Centre for Academic Studies (CADS) which will be charged with responsibilities such as student- advising; short certification courses; outreach activities; teaching and learning excellence; orientation; the writing centre; retreat- type activities on campus; career orientation; peer tutoring and mentoring and student counseling.

In Changing News Landscape, Even Television is Vulnerable
Trends in News Consumption: 1991-2012

Overview

The transformation of the nation?s news landscape has already taken a heavy toll on print news sources, particularly print newspapers. But there are now signs that television news ? which so far has held onto its audience through the rise of the internet ? also is increasingly vulnerable, as it may be losing its hold on the next generation of news consumers.

Online and digital news consumption, meanwhile, continues to increase, with many more people now getting news on cell phones, tablets or other mobile platforms. And perhaps the most dramatic change in the news environment has been the rise of social networking sites. The percentage of Americans saying they saw news or news headlines on a social networking site yesterday has doubled ? from 9% to 19% ? since 2010. Among adults younger than age 30, as many saw news on a social networking site the previous day (33%) as saw any television news (34%), with just 13% having read a newspaper either in print or digital form.

These are among the principal findings of the Pew Research Center?s biennial news consumption survey, which has tracked patterns in news use for nearly two decades. The latest survey was conducted May 9-June 3, 2012, among 3,003 adults.

The proportion of Americans who read news on a printed page ? in newspapers and magazines ? continues to decline, even as online readership has offset some of these losses. Just 23% say they read a print newspaper yesterday, down only slightly since 2010 (26%), but off by about half since 2000 (47%).

The decline of print on paper spans beyond just newspapers. The proportion reading a magazine in print yesterday has declined over the same period (26% in 2000, 18% today). And as email, text messaging and social networking become dominant forms of communication, the percentage saying they wrote or received a personal letter the previous day also has fallen, from 20% in 2006 to 12% currently. There has been no decrease in recent years in the percentage reading a book on a typical day, but a growing share is now reading through an electronic or audio device.

While print sources have suffered readership losses in recent years, television news viewership has remained more stable. Currently, 55% say they watched the news or a news program on television yesterday, little changed from recent years. But there are signs this may also change. Only about a third (34%) of those younger than 30 say they watched TV news yesterday; in 2006, nearly half of young people (49%) said they watched TV news the prior day. Among older age groups, the percentages saying they watched TV yesterday has not changed significantly over this period.

The changing demographics of the TV news audience are particularly noticeable in the audiences for local and cable news. The overall share of Americans saying they regularly watch local television news has slipped from 54% in 2006 to 48% today ? and in that regard it remains one of the news sources with the broadest reach. But the number of 18-to-29 year-olds regularly watching local news has fallen from 42% in 2006 to 28% today.

Over this same period, the regular audience for cable news also has aged. In 2006 and 2008, there were only modest age differences in regular cable news viewership. But in the current survey, more than twice as many of those 65 and older as those younger than 30 say they regularly watch cable news (51% vs. 23%).
CNN?s Losses Continue

Among individual cable news outlets, CNN?s regular audience has declined since 2008. Four years ago, nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) said they regularly watched CNN; that has fallen to 16% in the new survey.

Regular viewership for both Fox News and MSNBC has not changed much in recent years.
About one-in-five Americans (21%) say they regularly watch Fox News, while about half as many (11%) say they regularly watch MSNBC.
Print on Paper: Going, Going ?

While Americans enjoy reading as much as ever ? 51% say they enjoy reading a lot, little changed over the past two decades ? a declining proportion gets news or reads other material on paper on a typical day. And there is new evidence in the survey of a shift in reading to electronic platforms.

In the new survey, only 29% say they read a newspaper yesterday, with just 23% reading a print newspaper. Over the past decade, the percentage reading a print newspaper has fallen by 18 points (from 41% to 23%). Somewhat more (38%) say they regularly read a daily newspaper, although this percentage also has declined, from 54% in 2004. Figures for newspaper readership may not include some people who read newspaper content on sites that aggregate news content, such as Google News or Yahoo News.

Over the past decade, there have been smaller declines in the percentages of Americans reading a magazine or book in print (six points and four points, respectively) than for newspapers.

Just as online newspaper readers make up an ever-greater share of all newspaper readers, so too are more magazine readers and book readers abandoning the printed page for tablets, digital books and other devices. In the current survey, 9% of those who said they read a magazine yesterday, and 20% who read a book, read them in a non-print format.

And substantial percentages of the regular readers of leading newspapers now read them digitally. Currently, 55% of regular New York Times readers say they read the paper mostly on a computer or mobile device, as do 48% of regular USA Today and 44% of Wall Street Journal readers.

By contrast, most readers of such magazines as Harpers, the Atlantic and the New Yorker still read them in print. But even for these magazines, nearly a quarter of regular readers (23%) say they read them mostly on a computer or digital device.
Online News: More Mobile, More Social

While traditional news platforms have lost audience, online news consumption has been undergoing major changes as well. Nearly one-in-five Americans (17%) say they got news yesterday on a mobile device yesterday, with the vast majority of these people (78%) getting news on their cell phone. Among smartphone owners, nearly a third (31%) got news yesterday on a mobile device.

The second major trend in online news consumption is the rise of news on social networks. Today, 19% of the public says they saw news or news headlines on social networking sites yesterday, up from 9% two years ago. And the percentage regularly getting news or news headlines on these sites has nearly tripled, from 7% to 20%.

In part, this is a byproduct of the explosive growth in social networking. In the current survey, 41% of all adults, including 47% of online adults, say they used Facebook or another social networking site yesterday. (For more on social networking, see surveys conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.)

On top of the increase in social network use, the poll finds that news is also more prevalent on social networking sites. The share of users who saw news there yesterday nearly doubled from 19% to 36% between 2010 and 2012.

The increasing use of these sites for news has not just occurred among young people. In fact, those in their 30s are nearly as likely as those 18 to 24 to say they saw news or news headlines on Facebook or another social networking site yesterday (30% vs. 34%). And about a quarter of adults in their 40s (23%) saw news yesterday on social networks, up from just 8% in 2010.

The two trends in online news consumption ? growing numbers getting news via mobile devices and the increasing use of social networks ? are complementary. Overall, 55% of Americans access the internet on a mobile device, such as a cell phone or tablet; among this group, 30% say they saw news on social networking sites yesterday. That compares with just 9% of Americans who are online but do not access the internet on a mobile device.
Getting News on Twitter

While news gathering is very common among Twitter users, the overall reach is limited because the audience remains relatively small. About one-in-ten Americans (13%) ever use Twitter or read Twitter messages. By comparison, more than half (54%) ever use other social networking sites, such as Facebook, Google Plus or LinkedIn.

As a result, far fewer people get news on Twitter than on other social networking sites. Just 11% ever see news on Twitter, while 3% got news there yesterday. Nearly half of adults (47%) ever get news on Facebook and other social networking sites and 19% got news on one or more of those sites yesterday.

Nonetheless, Twitter users are increasingly getting news on the site and sharing news stories with others. Overall, 83% of Twitter users ever see news on Twitter and 26% saw news there yesterday; both percentages are up considerably from two years ago. And most Twitter users (59%) tweet or retweet news headlines on Twitter. About the same percentage of users of Facebook and other social networks (61%) use those sites for sharing news or news headlines.

Newspaper: Test security inconsistent among states

ATLANTA (AP) ? The federal government has no standards to protect the integrity of the achievement tests it requires in tens of thousands of public schools, and test security among the states is so inconsistent that Americans can't be sure those all-important test scores are legitimate, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The newspaper surveyed the 50 state education departments and found that many states do not use basic test security measures designed to prevent cheating. And nearly half the states, the newspaper found, make almost no attempt to screen test results for irregularities.

That kind of lax oversight contributed to the cheating scandal that swept Atlanta schools in 2009, the newspaper said (bit.ly/R2smn3) in a story that appeared online Saturday. Evidence of widespread cheating is now emerging in Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio, El Paso, Texas, and other cities around the country. The Journal-Constitution reported earlier this year that it had found patterns of suspicious changes in test scores in nearly 200 school districts nationwide.

The No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law 10 years ago, made standardized testing the cornerstone of national education policy. But it offered little direction on test security.

"To spend all this money and all this energy on testing, and the one area where we haven't devoted the same energy is standardizing the administration of the test to deter cheating," said Wayne Camara, vice president of research at The College Board, which administers the SAT and Advanced Placement tests. "To have better or standardized procedures would limit opportunities for cheating."

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview that test security is the purview of state and local officials.

"So much of this is best done with thoughtful leaders at the state level, not a new complicated federal bureaucracy," Duncan said. "I don't think anyone wants a national testing police."

The Journal-Constitution's survey ? which elicited responses from 47 states ? reveals wildly inconsistent practices around the country. Some states require outside investigations of cheating in school districts, but most states permit districts to investigate themselves. Some states look for radical changes in scores from year to year, but most don't. Slightly more than half send out independent monitors to oversee testing, while at least 19 do not.

And the motivation to cheat could increase as more states and districts tie teacher evaluations, bonuses and pay to test results.

"If you think there's cheating now under school accountability, wait until what you see under teacher accountability," said Scott Marion, associate director at the Center for Assessment, a not-for-profit firm that works with about 30 states to develop tests and teacher accountability systems.

The newspaper reported that officials may be loath to report or even acknowledge cheating. In Atlanta, for example, accusations of cheating were met with denials not only from the school district but from local business leaders.

"There is typically little to no incentive for anyone to take threats to test security seriously," said Greg Cizek, a professor and testing expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Educators are happy when test scores go up; parents are happy when their children do well; students are pleased when they are declared to be 'proficient'; the public is assuaged when all schools appear to be increasing learning."

With no motivation from the federal government and with little reason to look for cheating on their own, most states designed security systems that have failed to find blatant cheating even when the evidence is right in front of them, the newspaper found.

Records show some state officials failed to act when whistleblowers stepped forward. Some states did nothing to investigate schools where students posted almost impossible gains on tests from one year to the next.

Many states, the newspaper reported, make it easier for educators to cheat by using weak security procedures. Forty-four allow teachers to proctor tests for their own students. The proctor's job is to ensure the security of the test; for example, making sure no unauthorized materials are used, enforcing time limits and reporting irregularities.

State and district records from multiple states show that some teachers are not above guiding their students to the right answers.

A teacher at a Phoenix elementary school, for example, told a colleague that she'd used red and green M&Ms during a test to nudge students toward the right answers. If she set a red M&M on a child's desk, that signaled the pupil had the wrong answer and should do the problem over again. If she put a green one on the desk, that meant the child had the right answer and should move on.

Sharon Rideau, an elementary and middle school teacher in California, told the red-and-green M&M story in her doctoral thesis, which focused on cheating. Rideau's survey of more than 3,000 Arizona teachers in 2008 revealed 50 percent either had cheated themselves or knew a colleague who cheated.

"I think it happens much, much more now," Rideau said. "It happened before NCLB and now we have all this pressure on us. It's had a great impact."

Don't Make These Mistakes With Your Retirement Plans

Dow Jones industrial average, investments, bonds, New York Stock Exchange

(credit: Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

BOSTON (CBS) ? Don?t Make These Mistakes With Your Retirement Plans -

  • Not taking advantage of your employer?s matching contribution. You have walked away from free money!
  • Not contributing to your retirement plan because you don?t like the choices. Even a mediocre plan is better than no plan especially if your employer matches.
  • Choosing the ?safest? investment, the one that appears to the most conservative without understanding that all investments have risk.
  • Basing investment choices on what the ?company guru? has chosen for his portfolio; with investing one size does not fit all.
  • Putting all retirement assets into company stock. Not prudent to have more than 25 to 35% invested in company stock. Some experts will tell you, at the max, 10% but try to tell that to the Apple employees. The risk here is that there is no diversification. So your job and retirement are both tied to a single firm.
  • Cashing out your retirement savings when you leave your job. Over 50% of plan participants take the money and spend it rather than roll it into an IRA. Let?s say you have $5,000 in your retirement plan and want to take it with you, the company is required to withhold 20% if you want to take your money out. So you?ll get $4,000 to spend. Oh, and when you file your taxes you will owe a 10% penalty, which will amount to $500. If you had left that money in a tax-deferred account for another 30 years and you got an 8% return, you would have had over $50,000.
  • Not regularly checking account statements against pay stubs to be sure the account is being credited properly and your contributions are invested as selected.
  • Choosing the most aggressive investment thinking it will produce the greatest return.
  • Making choices based simply on the number of funds. If the company offers 10 funds, putting 10% into each fund.
  • Making investment selections for a retirement plan without taking into account what else you own. You should be looking at your aggregate portfolio including a spouse?s retirement plan as well as your personal investments.
  • Trying to time the market. This often leads to employees selling low and buying high.
  • Borrowing from your retirement plan. Although you are paying yourself back if you should lose your job you will be required to pay back the loan in 30 days or it is considered a withdrawal. And the reason you borrowed was because you didn?t have the money. Also, you will be paying it back with after-tax dollars and when you withdraw those funds in retirement you will be taxed on them again.

New VSS Forecast Sees Radio Gaining 2% In Ad Spending For ...

vsslogo.JPG

2012-2016 Forecast

Spending within the U.S. Communications Industry will increase 5.2% in 2012 to reach $1.189 trillion as consumers and businesses increasingly embrace digital technology and return to spending levels not seen since before the recent worldwide economic downturn, according to the 2012 Forecast released today by VERONIS SUHLER STEVENSON.

The 26th edition of the VSS Communications Industry Forecast 2012-16 found that the U.S. Communications Industry spending grew 4.4% in 2011 to $1.129 trillion despite a sluggish economy in which nominal Gross Domestic Product expanded 3.9%. Spending rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7% in the 2006-2011 forecast period, surpassing GDP by a 0.3%. VSS expects the Communications Industry to grow at a 5.2% CAGR to $1.455 trillion by 2016, almost two times the growth rate during the past five years. At that pace, the Communications Industry will remain the fifth-largest industry among 15 economic sectors in 2016.

Traditional Consumer Advertising spending will post a 2.0% gain in 2012 to $146.57 billion. Even-year political and Olympics spending on Broadcast Television and accelerated growth in Broadcast and Satellite Radio and Out-of-Home Media will drive the gain. Broadcast TV, Broadcast and Satellite Radio, and Out-of-Home Media will also drive a 2.1% CAGR in the forecast period.

"Digital's influence is now a constant and significant factor in every sector, segment and sub-segment of the U.S. Communications industry," said VSS Co-Founder/Pres. JOHN SUHLER. "At the same time as digital technology and innovation continue to spur growth in the industry or propel the communications industry forward, emerging digital media and services are significantly changing consumption habits among both institutional and consumer end-users. These developments will drive digital-related expenditures to constitute nearly 40% of the overall U.S. Communications Industry spending by 2016."

Calif. bans Facebook snooping by employers

1 hr.

SACRAMENTO???Californians who use social media like Twitter and Facebook have a little more privacy protection from employers or universities who may want access to usernames or passwords after the governor signed two bills into law on Thursday.

Job applicants and employees will have protection from employers who demand their login credentials to social media platforms or personal e-mail accounts, according to one of the bills, authored by Assembly member Nora Campos, a Democrat from San Jose.

Employers are barred from firing or disciplining those who refuse to give up any information related to their social media accounts.

"The Golden State is pioneering the social media revolution and these laws will protect all Californians from unwarranted invasions of their personal social media accounts," Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement released after he shared the news on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media accounts.

Related story:?Red Tape: Bill would make Facebook snooping, digital spying by employers illegal

Brown also signed a similar bill by state Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco, prohibiting colleges or universities from demanding user names, passwords, or other identifying information from students, prospective students and student groups.

That bill, according to Brown's office, came in response to a "growing trend" of schools "snooping into student social media accounts, particularly those of student athletes."

Both laws go into effect on Jan. 1.?

Magical Marley to trample opposition in A1 480m Flat at Perry Barr

Magical Marley?s latest win is still fresh in everyone?s memory. The black dog made it look so easy at the A2 level that his connections decided to take him straight up to the open class.

W. Russell?s charge suffered a lot mess in his debut appearance at the top level and as a result, completed the order of finish. Following an awful loss, he is coming one step down, making himself available for Tuesday?s A1 480m Flat at Perry Barr.

Magical Marley?s win at the A2 level was extremely impressive. After leaving the fifth trap, the son of Shaneboy Lee was uncatchable. An early pace and the strategy to go wide helped the hound establish his supremacy in the early exchanges.

He kept his head in front all the way through, winning the race by a couple of lengths. The skilful hound has an impressive record over 480 metres, and the bettors should not judge him on his recent 275-metre loss.

This trip will allow him to regain his momentum, and if he takes an early advantage, it will become a hectic outing for the rest of the pack. Other participants are: Catcherintherye, Tyrap Gaga, Timely Impact, Cals Commander and Cooneen Fantasy. The cash prize for the winner is not a big one, but every hound?s respect is at stake.

Cooneen Fantasy has the draw in favour, but supporting him in this class does not look the way to any riches. The bookmakers are likely to keep Tyrap Gaga?s price down because of her extraordinary abilities. The recent form is an issue though, as she faced three unlucky defeats lately.

Catcherintherye can produce a good turn of foot, and if he succeeds in doing so, his chances will be quite good. Cals Commander is due to start from the fourth trap, and this box does not guarantee a clear run. Similarly, Timely Impact is likely to find it really difficult to outclass this line-up.

Beating Catcherintherye and Tyrap Gaga will be a tough task, and the only fellow who can do this is Magical Marley. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

7 tips for playing 'Borderlands 2' with friends

3 hrs.

You may think that the best thing about "Borderlands 2" is the guns.?

And, well, you might be right. At least in part. Like the first (beloved) "Borderlands" game, "Borderlands 2" is a?first-person-shooter/role-playing?mashup that finds players on a distant planet, scooping up a stunning array of guns (there are?"millions and millions" of them, we're told)?that must then be?used to take on a wildly?colorful host of bad guys and even badder creatures.

But give this game some real playtime and you'll discover that, like the first "Borderlands," what really makes?"Borderlands 2" tick is the people you play with.?The new game ??which drops players onto the planet of Pandora for a gun-filled, madcap treasure hunting adventure ??is made especially to be played cooperatively with up to four people. And playing together ??guns blazing ??is an absolute, well, blast.

"Co-op is at the heart of everything we do here," Gearbox Software's?Randy Varnell, the?design producer for "Borderlands 2" told me during a recent interview. And, he said, this time around, the co-op gameplay has been beefed up and polished up?even more.

"It definitely has grown up," he said, explaining that they've added new features such as?online?split-screen gameplay?as?well as the new Bandit Technical?vehicle that lets four players ride and gun together. There's also new enemies that are "far more challenging."?(Watch out for?Terramorphousthe Invincible????a very big, very bad boss?that will take four very skilled, very powerful players to take down.)

Meanwhile,?"You look at how we?ve designed the classes andabilities, and?you?re going to find even more ways to play with your friends," Varnell said.

But playing well with others isn?t always easy. And so?I asked Varnell for some tips on how players can make the most of their "Borderlands 2"?co-op game. Here was his advice:

Mix?and match your characters?
There are?four new character classes in "Borderlands 2" ??Axton the?Commando,?Maya the?Siren,?Salvador the Gunzerker and?Zer0 the?Assassin (see top photo). They each have different strengths and different sets of?skills you can put to use?as you play. And while you can play the same character your friends are playing when you play together, Varnell says you?really should mix it up

"To?getthe most out of co-op, I would say pick a couple of different classes," he said. "And evenmore important than that, make a?plan (more on that below). Each class has three skill trees. Andwe really spent a lot of time with 'Borderlands 2' making sure each skill tree isdifferent."

Play?Maya the Siren, for example, and follow the skill tree known as "Harmony" and you'll end up with a character who has?some really great?healing powers that can be a big?help to your team. If you put her?Harmony skills to use, she will be able to instantly revive a dying friend?from a distance and she can even?fire healing bullets at her own teammates.

Meanwhile Salvador the Gunzerker has a "Brawn" skill tree that ramps up his physical toughness.

"He has a lot of abilities that just turn him into the guywho can wade into the middle of a fight and take all the damage from theenemies and distract them," Varnell says. "Which is a really popular tacticin co-op."

These are the kinds of things you should take some time to think about before you start a?co-op game because it will really pay off in the long run.

"Especially if you?re playing with more than two players, I almostalways say get a Maya in your group and go Harmony," Varnell said, adding, "A Salvador in the Brawn tree and a?Maya in the Harmony tree would be really awesome together."

Have a strategy
"All of our characters have different things they?can do and different ways you can play them?and interact," Varnell said. "Talk with your friends. Even if you?re matchmaking with someone online, we have built-in voice chat now so say hello and say, 'Hey how are you playing your Salvador? Are you sniping or going?mele with Zer0? Are you support Maya or damage Maya?

"Try understanding how the other player is playing their character and adapt?to their play style," Varnell advises. "There are lots of different strategies, but finding one that works in your group is a really great thing to do."

Be?nice?... and share?(sometimes)
You can play "Borderlands 2" split-screen with a friend sitting?beside you on the couch?or you can let?the game's online?matchmaking put you together with random people. ?But no matter who you're connecting?with,?"Be nice," Varnell says.?"I think that?s a general rule for all of life."

Sure, a little friendly competition is?part of the game.?Because "Borderlands 2" is set on Pandora ??a planet alive with that wild?wild-west spirit ? the game involves competing?to see who gets the best loot:?awesome guns, cash and other goodies that appear in the game as you explore and defeat enemies.

"When a?gun drops,?we don?t give you two copies. You have to decide whogets that piece of loot," Varnell says. "We think that?s really important and that?s actuallyone of the most interesting parts of co-op. But you know, be nice and beconsiderate. If someone else is using sniper rifles and a good sniper rifledrops, you should probably let them have it. And vice?versa. When that shotgun you?ve always wanted drops,?they should probably let you have it.

"It really is one of those great heartwarming, awesome teambuilding experiences," Varnell says. "And I?m not trying to be clich? here. It really isawesome when you play with a great team and you have that kind of graciousnessand you think of each other."

Save?your friends when they need saving
Payattention to what the other people on your team are doing because with all those bullets and baddies flying?they may need you ??and need you badly ??at any moment.

"Borderlands 2" features Second Wind and Revive mechanics. That is, if?during a battle you're badly injured and lose all of your health, you will go into a "down state." At that point you have a certainamount of time? to try to kill anenemy on your own, which will will revive you and get you?back up in the fight. Or,?during that limited time,?you can recover if a?friend comes over and revives you.

"Taking??a moment to go and bring a friend back into the fight canbe really, really important," Varnell said. "Having two people up in a fight is going to take theenemies down faster and it's going to help the fight go a whole lot better."

And for those of you worried about taking damage and risking your own life?while you?revive your teammate, Varnell offers this important tip: "When you are reviving a co-op teammate, you actually take lessdamage from enemies."

Being the hero really does pay off.

Look?for those?Class Mods
Class Mods?are items that can be found or bought in Borderlands (check those hidden?lockers and chests, people) or earned for completing missions. They are upgrades that give an added boost to your character's abilities. But perhaps even?more importantly, some of them can give a?boost to?the entire team.

"There are things like Team Health Regeneration, Team Ammo Regeneration ??which is really cool ??and Team Shield Capacity," Varnell says. "What?s really cool,?especially if you play witha three or four-person?co-op group, is if you hunt down those Class Mods that havethose team abilities on them and everybody has one of those. Man, it makesyour team super powerful."

Take the time to hear the story?and dialog
Varnell points out that, with "Borderlands 2," Gearbox really took the time to beef up and flesh out the story and the world that players experience.

"Theworld of Pandora is an?amazingly quirky, fun, odd place. It has lot of story anddialog," he says. "And a lot of that is spoken now. In fact, there is some incredible voice actingin the game."

And so he advises players to take the time to hear the dialog and pay attention to the story. And that means,?when?playing?with friends, you have to be especially careful and respectful of what your teammates are doing.

For example,?"In the hub city of Sanctuary, there are eight or 10different missions immediately available, and if everyone accepts a?different missionat the same time you're going to stomp on the order of the dialog," he explains. "It will create a less-than-idealexperience if you don?t pay attention to what other people are doing.

"So my pro-tip for people who want to engage in the story andappreciate and understand that story,?is take some time. Let the mission play out andlet people hear what?s going on there," he says.

Which leads us to...

?Enjoy the journey
"It?s a big, wild,?weird place and it's full of fun," Varnell says of "Borderlands 2." "A lot of people are rushing through because they want to be the first to reach?the level cap and they want to be thefirst to finish the story, but there?s a lot to experience. This is a big game.?Enjoy it. Enjoy itat your own?pace."

Bomb hits school used by Syrian security forces

BEIRUT (AP) ? Several bombs went off Tuesday inside a school in the Syrian capital that activists say was being used by regime forces as a security headquarters. Ambulances rushed to the area and an initial report on state media said seven people were wounded.

An amateur video posted online showed smoke billowing from several spots in an area near a major road. The narrator said: "A series of explosions shake the capital Damascus." The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

Over the past few months, rebels have increasingly targeted security sites and symbols of regime power in a bid to turn the tide in Syria's 18-month conflict, which activists say has left some 30,000 people dead. In July, a bombing in the heart of Damascus killed four senior security officials including the defense minister and President Bashar Assad's brother-in-law. Other large blasts have targeted the headquarters of security agencies in the capital, killing scores of people this year.

Abu Hisham al-Shami, an activist based in Damascus, told The Associated Press via Skype that the "Sons of Martyrs School" had recently been turned into a regime security center. He said government forces use the school as a base to fire mortars at rebellious neighborhoods.

State-run television quoted the director of the school, Mohammed Amin Othman, as saying that two bombs exploded inside the school, wounding seven people and causing minor damage. It said the bombs were planted by "terrorists," the term the government uses for rebels.

Othman said in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency that no students were at the school Tuesday. Although the school year started last week in Syria, Othman said the boarding school will open next week.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 20 people were wounded, some of them seriously, in several blasts at the school. It said most of the wounded were members of military.

A worker outside the school, who refused to be identified, said two diesel tankers exploded inside the school compound, wounding at least four people, one of them seriously. He added that the wounded were rushed to nearby hospitals.

He said a thick plume of smoke billowed over the area and fire reached the fifth story of the building. A nearby theater for the school's students was partially damaged and the blast caused its ceiling to collapse.

Also Tuesday, Syrian rebels released Lebanese citizen Awad Ibrahim, who was one of 11 Shiite Muslim pilgrims abducted in May shortly after entering Syria from Turkey on their way to Lebanon, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency reported.

Ibrahim, who crossed into Turkey Tuesday afternoon and expected to fly home later, is the second to be released and nine remain held in northern Syria.

His release came after two Turkish citizens and several Syrians were set free in Beirut after being abducted by Lebanese tribesmen to press for the release of Lebanese. Turkey hosts leading Syrian opposition figures and rebel commanders.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees reported violence throughout the country including clashes between troops and rebels near the southern town of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Both groups said at least seven people were killed in the fighting.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said several mortars fired by Syrian government troops targeting rebels hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, but no one was hurt in the shelling.

The incident marks the second time Syrian mortars have landed on the border area since Syria's crisis erupted 18 months ago. In July, mortar shells fell about one kilometer (half a mile) from the Golan boundary.

The Israeli-annexed Golan Heights was captured from Syria in 1967.

In Jordan, dozens of Syrian refugees angry over harsh living conditions in their desert tent camp clashed with Jordanian police, hurling stones and smashing charity offices and a hospital, officials and refugees said Tuesday.

The rioting late Monday in the Zaatari camp was the worst violence since the facility opened in July near the Jordan-Syria border. About 26 policemen were injured by stones thrown by the refugees, a police official said.

A Syrian refugee in the camp, Abu Nawras, said police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters who were demanding improved conditions, better food and education for their children.

The camp, which hosts about 32,000 Syrians who fled the civil war at home, has seen smaller protests in the past weeks as refugees mostly complained about snakes and scorpions, and demanded their tents be replaced with trailers so they can better protect themselves from the scorching sun, cold nights and ubiquitous dust.

Hundreds of thousands have fled the chaos in Syria as the uprising against President Bashar Assad turned increasingly violent. Jordan alone has taken in some 200,000 Syrians ? the largest number in the region ? while Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq have taken in the rest.

Pakistani bounty placed on anti-Islam filmmaker

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A Pakistani minister offered $100,000 on Saturday to anyone who kills the maker of an online video which insults Islam, as sporadic protests rumbled on across parts of the Muslim world.

"I announce today that this blasphemer, this sinner who has spoken nonsense about the holy Prophet, anyone who murders him, I will reward him with $100,000," Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour told a news conference, to applause.

"I invite the Taliban brothers and the al Qaeda brothers to join me in this blessed mission."

A spokesman for Pakistan's prime minister said the government disassociated itself from the minister's statement.

While many Muslim countries saw mostly peaceful protests on Friday, fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video.

People involved in the film, an amateurish 13-minute clip of which was posted on YouTube, have said it was made by a 55-year-old California man, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

Nakoula has not returned to his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos since leaving voluntarily to be interviewed by federal authorities. His family has since gone into hiding.

In the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Saturday, thousands of Islamist activists clashed with police who used batons and teargas to clear an unauthorized protest. In Kano, northern Nigeria's biggest city, Shi'ite Muslims burned American flags, but their protest passed off peacefully.

The demonstrations were less widespread than on Friday, but showed anger still simmered around the world against the film and other insults against Islam in the West, including cartoons published by a French satirical magazine.

Showing continued nervousness among Western governments, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called on Muslim countries to protect foreign embassies.

"The governments in host countries have the unconditional obligation to protect foreign missions. If that doesn't happen, we will emphatically criticize that and if it still doesn't happen it won't go without consequences," he told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday

Germany's embassy in Sudan was stormed on September 14 as was the U.S. mission in the capital Khartoum where there were deadly clashes between police and protesters against the film.

MILITIA OUSTED IN BENGHAZI

In the Libyan city of Benghazi, a crowd forced out an Islamist militia some U.S. officials blame for a deadly attack on the U.S. consulate during one of the first protests, on September 11.

Ansar al-Sharia, which denies it was involved in the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, quit the city after its base was stormed by Libyans angry at armed groups that control parts of the country.

That might go some way to vindicate U.S. President Barack Obama's faith in Libya's nascent democracy where Ambassador Christopher Stevens had worked to help rebels oust Muammar Gaddafi only to be killed in a surge of anti-Americanism.

"It's the view of this administration that it's a pretty clear sign from the Libyan people that they're not going to trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of the mob," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

"It's also an indication that the Libyan people are not comfortable with the voices of a few extremists and those who advocate and perpetrate violence, to drown out the voices and aspirations of the Libyan people." [ID:nL5E8KM49W]

In Egypt, the leader of Egypt's main ultra orthodox Islamist party, that shares power with the more moderate Muslim Brotherhood, said the film and the French cartoons were part of a rise of anti-Islamic actions since the Arab spring revolts.

"A new reality in the Middle East has emerged after the toppling of autocratic regime of Hosni Mubarak and others through democratic elections that brought newly-elected Islamist governments," Emad Abdel Ghaffour, leader of the Salafist Nour Party, told Reuters.

"There are interest groups who seek to escalate hatred to show newly-elected governments and their Muslim electorate as undemocratic," he said.

Nour, whose party is the second largest in parliament and plays a formidable force in Egypt's new politics, said President Mohamed Mursi should demand "legislation or a resolution to criminalize "contempt of Islam as a religion and its Prophet" at the U.N. General Assembly next week.

Paul Ryan Booed At AARP (VIDEO)

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was booed by the audience while pledging to repeal Obamacare at AARP's annual conference Friday in New Orleans.

"The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds: It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation," said Ryan, drawing boos from the audience.

Speaking about the cut in the rate of growth for future Medicare spending, Ryan said, "The money wasn't walled off to stay in Medicare. Instead, the law turned Medicare into a piggy bank for Obamacare." That earned louder boos.

"You don't have to take my word for it, you don't have to take my word for it," Ryan pleaded.

Other points at the speech were met with applause, and Ryan was received at the start of his remarks with a mixture of applause and boos.

One remark that did draw applause was his criticism of the health care law's "unelected bureaucrats," an apparent reference to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a cost-control board with limited power that cannot specifically "ration" coverage by law.

Ryan and Romney both support a plan to transform Medicare into a quasi-voucher system, offering private plans alongside traditional Medicare.

Romney was booed at the NAACP conference in June when pledging to repeal Obamacare, although Romney appeared more rattled and strayed from his prepared remarks more than Ryan did on Friday.

While attacking President Barack Obama on social security, Ryan also was met with a mixture of boos and applause. "Time and again, this president has ducked the tough issues. He's put his own job security over your retirement security," he said. "Of course, he said he'd be willing to work with Republicans, but he has not moved an inch closer to common ground." The audience booed. "When it comes to bipartisanship, it's easy to talk the talk, but there is only one man running for president this year who has actually walked the walk. And that man is Mitt Romney."

(AP) ? A Milwaukee woman was convicted Thursday of killing a pregnant woman and trying to steal her full-term fetus last year.

A jury of six men and six women deliberated for about an hour before convicting Annette Morales-Rodriguez, 34, of two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the October 2011 deaths of the mother and fetus. She faces a mandatory life sentence when she is sentenced Dec. 14, although a judge could allow for the possibility of parole. Wisconsin doesn't have the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Morales-Rodriguez faked a pregnancy, panicked as her supposed due date approached and then lured 23-year-old Maritza Ramirez-Cruz to her house. There, she attacked her and used an X-Acto knife to cut the fetus out, according to the criminal complaint.

Ramirez-Cruz died of blood loss and asphyxiation, and her fetus, a boy, died as a result of her death, authorities say.

Morales-Rodriguez's defense attorneys didn't deny that she attacked Ramirez-Cruz. But they argued that the deaths of the mother and fetus weren't intentional because Morales-Rodriguez didn't intend for anyone to die.

Morales-Rodriguez did not testify during the trial, and her attorneys did not call any witnesses.

The strongest evidence against Morales-Rodriguez was a videotaped interview she gave to police in which she recounted the attack. She explained to investigators that she was desperate to give her boyfriend a son but that she couldn't "stay pregnant." She said she twice pretended to be pregnant, only to claim each time that she miscarried.

When she lied about a third pregnancy, she considered another scenario: killing a pregnant woman and stealing her baby. She described how she went to a Hispanic community center and found Ramirez-Cruz, a mother of three who was in her 40th week of pregnancy.

Morales-Rodriguez told police she bashed Ramirez-Cruz in the head with a baseball bat, then choked her until she passed out. She said she then put duct tape over the younger woman's eyes and nose and wrapped a plastic bag around her head. She then used a small blade to slice the victim open from hip to hip and pulled out a stillborn boy, Morales-Rodriguez said in the videotape.

She then called 911, telling a dispatcher she had just given birth to a baby who wasn't breathing.

In the ensuing investigation and autopsy, a medical examiner found evidence that the baby wasn't the product of a natural birth. A subsequent examination verified Morales-Rodriguez hadn't given birth.

Police later found Ramirez-Cruz's body in Moralez-Rodriguez's basement, according to the criminal complaint.
