Internet Abductions Of Olympic Proportions

?

By Ian Moyse, Workbooks.com, Eurocloud UK Board Member & Cloud Industry Forum Governance Board Member

Recent studies demonstrate that upwards of 25% of Internet bandwidth in an office are consumed by employees misusing the internet. According to Gartner, the average growth of business email volume is 30% annually, with the average size of the email content growing in parallel. Add to this the growth of Web misuse from streaming media, downloads, file sharing, social networking, and spam, and it becomes pretty clear that the mismanaged cost to business of non-work-related Internet use is already bad and getting worse.

With the Olympic tirade about to start there will be a mix of impacts on internet use and the security around it.? Users in the city are being told to work from home with some companies we hear being instructed by officialdom to reduce their staff in the city during the game on period!? These staff working remotely at home on work provided machines will spend how much time really working?? Will they be distracted by the usual lures of the web, facebook, Hotmail, youtube etc ? surely not!??

Worse still will be those employees across the UK still at their office location who will be viewing the Olympic activities and news online, streaming video and live TV will become commonplace. What impact will this have on not only the productivity of those guilty parties, but also those around them whose bandwidth is being sucked away from them!

There are plenty of examples already, including employees wasting more than two hours a day on recreational computer activities (according to a survey fielded by AOL & Salary.com) and that, according to an IDC report, ?30% ? 40% of Internet use in the workplace is unrelated to business.?

Studies and surveys such as these typically focus only on lost productivity ? and there?s no doubt that?s bad enough. But they rarely discuss the significant hidden financial impact of bandwidth wastage from these activities.

We have started to take bandwidth for granted as it?s become cheaper and more readily available. However, as the adoption of cloud-based solutions (like customer relations management tools) increases, it will be critical to ensure the user has a good experience with Web-based applications, with the speed of their ability to work unimpeded by bandwidth grabbers and slowdowns.

Social networkers are as much to blame as habitual gamers, sports fans, or file sharers: After ?posting messages,? the next two most common social network activities are uploading and downloading music and video content. Overall top bandwidth hogs reported include employees sending emails with large attachments, recreational Web surfing, listening to the radio over the Internet, music downloads, and streaming video over the Internet.

One rogue user in an office streaming large files can impact everyone else trying to work. Clearly, there?s a need to manage individual users? bandwidth usage.

Perhaps by taking simple steps, such as giving users bandwidth allowances, admins can control the abuse. By blocking streaming media, allowing users to go to sites but without the ability to see streamed videos, bandwidth usage can be reduced dramatically. It may also be possible to block the downloads of certain file types or MIME types, such as Flash Video .flv files, unless the user has a legitimate business reason to view them.? And blocking some MIME types can even help prevent users being bamboozled into infecting their own computers by malicious advertisements.

The web has increasingly become a valuable business tool for research, information (how often do you check a route, traffic, customer information with no second thought to the reliance on this medium) and for cloud applications that are fundamental to the business.

Action needs to be taken by organisations now to get control back of this valuable tool and medium and to reduce the negatives it can bring in terms of time wasting, HR cases (facebook examples are rife) and security risks. With a younger generation entering our businesses, for whom spending their life on facebook, twitter and the web is the norm, better to get these policies and policing tools in place now before it becomes even more of a risk and hill to climb to introduce this change of culture and behaviour.

Employees need to understand where the line is drawn, ?drive that internet car, but don?t speed, don?t drive dangerously and certainly don?t pick up strange hitch hikers along the way.? It?s essential our internet workers are not wasting valuable work time, acting recklessly or going off road using work assets on work systems!

An example solution to this is easy in using Software-as-a-Service Web filtering, offering unique advantages that can now be brought into play. For example, bandwidth compression of all traffic from the cloud to your users browsers, and even the ability to block Web adverts at the gateway, may conserve this bandwidth resource. Knowing and controlling where and what people can do on the web is no longer an option, its becoming a necessity.

Over time, simple measures such as these can conserve a large amount of bandwidth and regain productive employee work time.? An employee spending 10 minutes an hour outside smoking is visible and you can choose to address it. An employee wasting such time on internet activities is invisible and even to them that time passes fast and unnoticeably and the internet is of more interest to more people than an activity such as smoking. Think of this as the hidden disease in your company and start to prevent it now.

While we all appreciate the privilege of using the Internet for personal purposes at work, a small number of rotten apples on your network can truly ruin the whole bunch. The Olympics will drain your resources, productivity and bandwidth for sure! Draconian measures are sure to hurt morale, so it?s a bit of a balancing act to find the right mix of measures that work. As the growth of cloud applications and hosted services continues, it will be more important than ever to keep these bandwidth hogs in check, lest the rest of the company suffer.

Video Store application for BlackBerry PlayBook now available in Canada

Video Store application for BlackBerry PlayBook now available in Canada

We all know things aren't exactly looking bright over at RIM's Waterloo HQ, but, thankfully, that's not keeping the company from taking care of its current and very valuable customer base. How so? Well, earlier today the BlackBerry maker announced its official Video Store application is now live in Canada's App World, giving the PlayBook crowd a hub to buy / rent "thousands" of movies and TV shows. Obviously -- similar to iTunes and Google Play on their respective slates -- folks will also be able to preview content before taking the plunge, and as a Berry rep told us, there should be no problem with streaming videos to a high-def television via the the tablet's HDMI output. Video Store Canada, as it's known by its formal name, is up for download now at the source link below.

Stress may cause women's brains to age prematurely

Despite the fact that women live longer than men, their brains seems to age faster. The reason? Possibly a more stressful life.

When people age, some genes become more active while others become less so. In the human brain, these changes can be observed through the "transcriptome" ? a set of RNA molecules that indicate the activity of genes within a population of cells.

When Mehmet Somel, a computational biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues compared the transcriptome of 55 male and female brains of different ages, they were surprised to find that the pattern of gene activation and deactivation that occurs with ageing appeared to progress faster in women than in men. This was particularly apparent in an area of the pre-frontal cortex.

"This was just the opposite of what we'd originally expected," says Somel, who was at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences in China when he did the research. He says that given the fact that females have a longer lifespan, they had expected to see slower or later ageing-related changes in their brain. "But it fits everyday observations on ageing. Not all organs within an individual age at the same rate," he says.

Somel's team compared the expression of more than 13,000 genes in four brain regions. In one region ? the superior frontal gyrus ? they found 667 genes that were expressed differently in men and women during ageing. Of those, 98 per cent were skewed towards faster ageing in women.

Some of these gene changes have previously been linked to general cognitive decline and degenerative disease.

Stressful life

However, sex differences were not uniform among all women. About half the women showed accelerated age-related changes. The researchers say that this hints towards the cause being environmental rather than simply biological.

Somel says: "A higher stress load could be driving the female brain towards faster ageing-related decline." His team found tentative support for that theory in a study of monkeys, where stress induced similar changes to their brain transcriptome.

Cyndi Shannon Weickert from Neuroscience Research Australia in Sydney, says the initial results are interesting but the connection to stress is speculative. She says it would help to know whether the subjects had other medical conditions at the time of death that might have affected their brain transcriptome. She notes that stress is only one possible cause of these effects. Inflammation, for example, might lead to similar genetic changes.

Next, Somel is planning to test the effects of stress on the brain transcriptome of rodents. He would also like to compare stress and age-related neurodegenerative disease patterns across cultures, where female roles vary. "If the mechanism we hypothesise is correct, any policy that ensures equality in opportunity and empowers women could improve future health."

Romney spokesman blasts ?false quote? about ?Anglo-Saxon heritage?

A campaign sticker for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is seen on a street sign for Romney Street??

Mitt Romney's campaign forcefully repudiated a quotation, ascribed to one of his foreign policy advisers and published by a leading British newspaper, suggesting that President Barack Obama does not understand America's "Anglo-Saxon heritage."

Spokesman Ryan Williams angrily denounced the comment on Wednesday as "an anonymous and false quote from a foreign newspaper." And Williams assailed Vice President Joe Biden for using the news report to accuse the Republican standard-bearer of playing politics with foreign policy while on an overseas tour.

"Today, the race for the highest office in our land was diminished to a sad level when the Vice President of the United States used an anonymous and false quote from a foreign newspaper to prop up their flailing campaign," Williams said in a statement emailed to reporters. The spokesman charged that Biden?who did not cite the specific quotation?had "advanced a falsehood" and accused him of trying "to divert voters' attention with specious shiny objects."

"We have more faith in American voters, and know they will see this latest desperate ploy for what it is," Williams predicted.

Here is how the Daily Telegraph characterized the unnamed Romney adviser's comments?which might suggest why the Republican's campaign is so aggressively hitting back:

In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

"We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special," the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: "The White House didn't fully appreciate the shared history we have".

As written, the quote didn't actually link Obama's handling of U.S.-Britain relations to his personal background in any way. But the last thing Romney needed was for a controversy to cloud his overseas trip, which will take him to Britain, Israel and Poland.

How to set up Face Unlock on your Android phone

Set up face unlock

Security is important these days. Our phones carry our lives, so using security features like Face Unlock can give us peace of mind.

As facial recognition software gets more and more sophisticated, it will also become more and more affordable – appearing on many of our electronic devices. While not foolproof – just yet – the Face Unlock feature built into your new Android phone does pretty well.

Plastic surgery options | Flash of Insight

When we think of plastic surgery the first thing that comes to mind
is elective cosmetic surgery. A great deal of plastic surgery is
actually reconstructive in nature. Cosmetic surgery is however, an
extremely fast growing and profitable field. According to a Tampa FL
plastic surgery practice (their site) these are some of the most popular
operations.

Face-lift Surgery

A face-lift is a surgical
procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. As we
age our skin shows various signs like wrinkles creases and sagging
skin. These signs are more obvious on some people?s faces than on
others. A myriad of factors from bone structure to skin tone to muscle
loss can cause these natural signs to be more pronounced. After a
surgery, the goal is not to simply look younger, but to look better.

Ear Surgery

Birth defects and injuries can result in an ear shape that is
unpleasant. The placement of the ear can also be adjusted to contribute
to a more symmetrical appearance. These surgeries can have a profound
effect on a person?s self-image.

Eyelid Surgery

Often
bags and wrinkles can detract from otherwise lovely eyes. Many patients
select this surgery to appear more rested and alert. This is commonly
used to deal with crows feet around the corners of the eyes.

Dermal Fillers

This low-cost option is great at maintaining a youthful appearance. It
can?t help with sagging skin, but it can provide volume to thin lips and
make face look younger and fresher.

Breast Augmentation

Among the most popular surgeries is the breast enhancement surgery. A
patient can easily attain the body shape she desires by selecting
implants. Often they choose this option after a weight loss or
pregnancy.

The implants can be selected to give exactly the amount of enhancement desired.

AT&T smartphone sales fall in 2Q, boosting net

NEW YORK (AP) ? AT&T Inc. on Tuesday posted the best profitability ever in its wireless arm, paradoxically because it sold fewer smartphones.

The largest telecommunications company in the U.S. said its subscribers are now holding on to their phones longer: The rate of upgrades to new phones was at a record low in the second quarter.

That's good news for the company because it to subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars to be able to sell it to customers for $99 or $199. IPhones, in particular, are expensive to sell, because Apple charges AT&T an average of around $650 for each one.

In March last year, AT&T started telling subscribers that they had to stay on contract for 20 months before they would be eligible for a new phone at the fully subsidized price. Before that, some high-paying customers had been eligible for upgrades after just 12 months.

"It appears our policy is working," John Stephens, AT&T's chief financial officer, told analysts on a conference call. He said another big contributor to the low upgrade rate was that many people upgraded late last year, when the latest iPhone debuted.

AT&T activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. That helped boost wireless operating income by 18 percent in the quarter, to $4.9 billion.

Analysts still expect AT&T's profits to take a dive this fall, when the new iPhone comes out. In what's become an annual ritual, buyers flood AT&T and Apple stores, and AT&T pays dearly for the privilege of having the nation's most popular network for iPhones.

The tighter upgrade policies don't seem to be scaring off AT&T subscribers. They were more loyal than ever in the quarter, helping AT&T outdo analyst expectations by adding a net 320,000 subscribers on contract-based plans in the quarter.

However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users. Also, AT&T continues to lag Verizon Wireless, which already has more subscribers. Last week, Verizon reported adding 888,000 subscribers to its rolls in the quarter.

The strong wireless results helped boost Dallas-based AT&T's net income to $3.9 billion, or 66 cents per share, for the April to June period. That's up 8.7 percent from $3.6 billion, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier.

For the latest quarter, analysts expected earnings of 63 cents per share.

Revenue edged up 0.3 percent to $31.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $31.7 billion. If it weren't for the sale of its phone-books business in May, revenue would have risen 2 percent.

AT&T sold a controlling stake in the Yellow Pages division to private-equity firm Cerberus Capital for $950 million. The unit was profitable but shrinking, and AT&T wants to be a growing company.

AT&T's stock slipped 75 cents to close at $34.63 Tuesday, retreating from levels close to its three-year high of $36.21, hit three weeks ago.

The traditional, non-wireless phone company side of AT&T still accounts for nearly half of the company's revenue. It's in decline, but the rate of decline slowed down in the second quarter, as the division that sells telecommunications services to businesses did well, and AT&T continued to sign up households to its U-Verse TV service.

Many Liberal Lawmakers Support Legalized Online Gaming ? Blog ...

Looking to the future, many legalized online gaming companies may opt to be based entirely online. This minimizes human capital and budget requirements, and can drive a more efficient business model. Carline Snarr CEO of a local legalized online gaming company, has already pledged to do this, with a major shift in the business planned in the next 6 months. ?I forsee us going entirely online,? said Carline Snarr, ?because people hardly come to our stores in person anymore. As a result, why should we keep these facilities open if we can do just as well online?? Without a doubt, in the pre-internet marketing days, most legalized online gaming resellers only used the internet as a means to communicate via email with current customers. ?Things in the industry really turned a corner when people began to acquire, not maintain customers online,? said Alena Derosier, a noted internet marketer and web designer. ?When acquisiton via online services got big, companies in the legalized online gaming sector finally woke up to the idea that the information super highway was here to stay - in a very big way.? ?After starting an internet legalized online gaming sales division in 2003, we saw our sales increase three-fold,? said Kimbra Kaluzny, director of marketing and sales for Mansour Stam and Dalia Fencil Associates, ?and this resulted in the creation of more jobs and employment opportunities in our company. Our number of employees has doubled, and our number of IT staff has quadrupled in a year?s time.? It?s no secret that the internet is a driving force in the legalized online gaming sales market. Most consumers will research their purchases online before actually going to a store, so that they understand legalized online gaming product specs and use requirements before having to deal with a live salesperson. ?I prefer to take my time and read about it all online first,? said Bigsby Nevils, a recent customer of the Francene Famulare Chain Outlets, ?I?m not a high pressure sales type, and rather just go to the store and check out sas soon as possible.? ?With internet legalized online gaming sales booming, we may have to cut back on in person sales teams,? said Steppello Guilbert, director of Human Resources for Boxer Kroell INC, ?mainly because we are losing money in that operational area. As we move forward, we?ll give those employees new job opportunities in our legalized online gaming company before we actually lay them off, so that they can continue to grow with our company if they so desire.? And, as internet sales in the legalized online gaming industry explode, parallel growth is being noted in the internet marketing field, particularly search engine and affiliate marketing. ?Search engines and affiliates have doubled our numbers,? said Groeschel Busick, director of marketing for Priddy Beaudette INC., ?and where there was once one or two big internet marketing firms, now there are well over ten in our industry. This growth speaks to the power of the information super high way.? Marketing online, however, is not as easy as it looks. Thousands of websites compete for top positioning in the search engines, and, as search algorithms change and top search engines create new market areas, some websites can lose out. One day, you might be number one for ?buy legalized online gaming?, a week later, number 100. The difference between these positions is obvious: no one wades through 100 results for a legalized online gaming product unless the first 99 are extremely poor. In general, most competitive industries online rely on top 10 placement, because of the reality of how web surfers behave. Equally important in the online sales arena is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is reselling your legalized online gaming product through individual webmasters and their websites, giving them typically 5 to 20 % for each successful sales. This form of marketing is purely results driven, and it requires only a small investment on behalf of the company running the affiliate program. ?We rely on affiliate marketing to drive our legalized online gaming sales and lead acquisition, mostly because some webmasters in our field are better at marketing online than we are,? said Calista Htwe, Marketing Chairman for Sneary Petti Partners LLC.

Minecraft: New Town Zoning

Jul 23, 2012

?

As MyFallen continues to grow, we must grow with it, but as with anything else, there are growing pains. We are starting to see a number of member-developed towns spring up on the map. This is a good thing and we encourage it. However, it does create a good deal of work for us and as such we need you all to work with us to make it a good experience for all.

So, if you want your town to be recognized and zoned as an actual town with a warp, entry and exit message, and subregions, you will need to submit an application here.

Your application for town zoning MUST include the following:

  • Why you want your town to be an officially recognized town.
  • The plan for your town, including how many people you will allow to build there, size, amenities, theme, etc.
  • How many people have committed to living in your town. You MUST have at least 5 (including yourself) to be considered for town zoning.
  • Proposed name of your town.
  • Requested warp name if town zoning is approved.
  • Town location.
  • Town rules.

The MFGC Staff will review your application and determine if it is acceptable or not. We may require you to provide additional information in order for us to make a decision. Decisions are made on a weekly basis, so it may take several days to get a response, depending on when you apply. Please be patient. We reserve the right to ask for changes in your name, plan, etc before approving your town for zoning.

If your application for town zoning is approved, you will be granted the following:

  • Full town status and zoning.
  • Warp for your town.
  • Protected region for your town.
  • Entry/exit message of your choice for your town.
  • Subregions will be allowed and set by mods for a fee. $2K MFC (MyFallen Cash) per add or change of subregions. Initial plot owners will get free region protection as always.
  • Listing of your town in the Town Registry at Spawn. (To be added before launch of this program.)

If you choose not to apply for town zoning you can still build your town, and we will protect it as one region, but we will not give it a warp or do subregions for individual plots. You can let people live there and build, but they will be added to the region for the entire town, not just their plot.

Also, starting now, mods will charge $5K MFC per region permissions change after the initial region is set up. So if you want to add your new best friend Steve to your area, so you can share a house, it will cost $5K MFC. And when you and Steve have a fight and you want him kicked out, it will cost you $5K MFC to remove him from the region. Initial region protection will remain free as always.

We hope this is clear, but if it isn?t please leave a comment with your question and we will clarify.

Get your purple on!

Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 quietly goes on sale as the Gobots of transforming tablets

Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 hybrid tablet

Lenovo's 10-inch IdeaTab S2 was one of the belles of its CES ball in offering a distinctly Transformer Pad-like experience for those not beholden to ASUS' view of the world. While there wasn't much attention given to the Android 4.0 tablet outside of the FCC filing we saw last month, it's getting its time to shine at last: the device is now sitting on Lenovo's virtual shelves as the S2110. The 10.1-inch slate's selling point remains its (strictly optional) keyboard dock, which supplies a trackpad, an SD slot, USB and 10 extra hours of battery life to keep that movie marathon going. Even if you have no intention of constructing the Gobot to ASUS' Transformer original, though, the S2110 is still a big leap over the so-so S2109 from the spring. A 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060A, a rear 5-megapixel camera and a landscape 1,280 x 800 screen are all incentives to pay the premium over the S2110's budget predecessor. Not that there will be much of a premium to pay -- despite setting a $449 official price, Lenovo is already discounting the S2110 to as little as $343. That's low enough to lure the cost-conscious away from the Transformer Pad elephant in the room, even if it reminds us of relatives that always bought us the cheaper robot toys when we were kids.

Teaching jobs in NJ ? Article Directory Site

Teaching jobs in NJ are becoming difficult to find. Recent college graduates and even seasoned teachers are finding it hard to find permanent positions in the various state school districts. Cost cuts in school budgets is a major factor in the shortage of teaching jobs in NJ.

Many people are looking at their available options in finding teaching jobs in NJ. Accepting positions in the school system outside of teaching such as janitorial or cafeteria services, allows the prospective teacher a better chance of exposure to the hiring system at their local school. This is no guarantee that they will be hired to that coveted teaching position.

Many others are looking at starting their own business because of the uncertainties in the job market today. There are several options available to the would-be entrepreneur. One is to start a traditional brick and mortar business. This option usually requires large upfront cash investments. A newer option is the untraditional internet home-based business with a broad spectrum of choices from multi-level marketing to digital product sales. This usually requires substantially less cash up front and can become very lucrative on a part-time basis.

Regardless of which option is chosen by people looking for teaching jobs in NJ, a thorough understanding of what?s involved and costs associated with that choice is essential as well as strong commitment to the project once a decision to go forward has been made.

Investing in Residential Property

Spelling Manor, Holmby HillsResidential property investment is one of the safest of all forms of investments, and it has made more Australian millionaires than any other market. Property investment is not, however, foolproof, nor absolutely certain. There are risks involved in residential property investment at all levels, and this article considers some of these. Off-plan investment, home construction and home purchase all have their own risks and benefits.

Equity

Buying a property is one of the much safer investments that you can make, but as the UK and USA markets have demonstrated, there is little doubt that the markets are susceptible to economic changes. When buying a property, there are two simple rules that you need to follow to keep your investment safer.

The first is to buy in areas where there is room for growth. Buying the largest property in a developed and expensive area means that you will likely be left with just a small amount of growth. A smaller home near a much larger property, however, is far more likely to increase dramatically in value than the larger property. Where you buy your property and the size of that property will have a huge impact on the profit that can be made from it.

The second rule of property investment is to avoid negative equity. Negative equity is what caused the UK and USA markets to collapse, because the amount of money that people had borrowed was far greater than the value of their homes. Avoiding negative equity is very important, because this will prevent you from losing anything more than the property that you have borrowed against. Negative equity must be avoided at all costs in property investment.

Cost Reduction

An important element of residential property investment is to reduce the cost of your investments, wherever possible. Buying or building the largest and nicest property will greatly limit your return on the property and increase your costs too. Cost reduction can be achieved in two ways.

The first is through the construction of your own kit home. If you have land that you can build on, then building a kit home will greatly increase the value, provide you with a tenancy income, and reduce the initial investment that you have to make. Reducing your costs in this manner will greatly reduce your risk, without damaging your returns. ?Kit homes cut out the need for architects and many other building processes to greatly reduce the costs.

The second way to achieve costreduction is to consider investment property ?off the plan?. Off-plan property is property that has not yet been built. In other words, you purchase the promised building before it is complete. Purchasing ?off the plan? will greatly decrease the initial investment that you have to make and will also give you a significant increase in value, as soon as the build is complete.

There are obvious risks to buying ?off the plan?, but it is possible to limit your risk to just the value of a deposit. This option for reducing costs, however, can lead to some impressive increases in value over a short investment period.

Minimising Risk

Overall, the investment in property is a safe investment. As long as you are sure to buy or build in a good area, avoid negative equity, and limit your investment wherever possible, you will be able to reap good benefits from such investment. However, remember to diversify your investments by investing in different areas, so that if anything does happen to the market, you will never lose everything.

Panasonic's new cameras aim for ambitious amateurs

16 hrs.

Panasonic has released a few new cameras generally focused on the high-end consumer market, with capabilities aimed at serious amateur photographers. Budget-minded shooters should look elsewhere, but others may find the new gear very compelling.

Their mirrorless lineup has been updated with the G5?model, a modest but significant improvement over the popular G3. It has a new 16-megapixel sensor that will shoot at up to 12,800 ISO, and Panasonic?claims?low-light performance has been improved generally as well.

The rear articulating touchscreen has twice as many pixels as before, going from 480x320 to 640x480, though the electronic viewfinder?appears to be unchanged.

It'll shoot six frames per second and takes 1080p video at a fairly high bitrate, putting it on a level with nicer camcorders and DSLRs. Panasonic also says the autofocus is among the world's fastest, acquiring a subject in less than a tenth of a second.

Next is the luxury point-and-shoot, the LX7. It packs some serious glass: an F/1.4-2.3 3.8x zoom, meaning low-light shots should be a snap, even if you zoom in. It's probably the fastest lens in a compact camera today.

The LX7 also has improved autofocus and video capabilities, the result of a new 10-megapixel sensor. That?may not sound like a lot these days, but when the image quality is good, you don't often?need more.

Some fun photographer features: a built-in neutral density filter (allowing you to take advantage of that fast lens in more conditions), a time-lapse mode (always fun to play with), and an impressive 11 frames per second rate in burst shooting. Leica usually puts out a modified one of these shortly afterward with a higher price tag, which gives you a general indication of the quality.

The FZ200 is Panasonic's?new super-zoom. Prized by parents and travelers, this type of camera isn't usually impressive enough to take attention away from cooler cameras, but this one is an exception. The reason is its insane lens: a 24x zoom with a constant F/2.8 aperture. I actually thought this was a mistake when the company mentioned it. Combined with an improved 12-megapixel sensor like that on the others in the new lineup, this camera really blows away the super-zoom competition.

It has a new high-resolution EVF, though the rear LCD isn't worth writing home about. It can record video at up to 240 frames per second, which is fantastic for slowing down action ? and with that lens, getting enough light for that kind of shot won't even be that difficult.

None of these cameras has official pricing yet, but you can be sure they will all fall toward?the high end of their respective markets. The G5 will compete with DSLRs at around the $800 level, the LX7 around the $500 range, and the FZ200 for a bit more. The pricing and availability will be announced a month before they become available ??perhaps late summer/early fall?? so interested buyers will have plenty of time to consider.
