The online edition of Cancer reports a new finding that without the PSA test it is unlikely that more than 3 times as many men would have presented advanced prostate cancer.? This is the latest torpedo aimed directly at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force?s recommendations that men need not participate in PSA screening tests.
The Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA) representing 95% large urology practices throughout the country (more than 1,800 physicians) making up 20% of U.S. urological practices, applauded this latest research report. The president of LUGPA Dr. Deepak Kapoor said, ?results overwhelmingly confirm that eliminating the PSA test ?would result in a public health catastrophe, as potentially tens of thousands of men who could have been cured will present with advanced disease and possibly die needlessly.?
Dr. Kapoor?s criticism of the USPSTF stressed the absence in its report referencing African Americans in particular and others who are at high risk to prostate cancer. He added, ?The 10 year survival for prostate cancer? has increased from around 50% before? PSA testing to an astounding 98%. ?We are not detecting more cancer; we are detecting cancer earlier and saving lives.?
